It’s hard to believe it, but August is here! And for the Boys and Girls Club of Elgin, August means the end of the summer club season, and the end of Running Club. RAFV’s Community Outreach Committee spent the day with the awesome kids who committed to increasing their physical fitness this summer by joining the Running Club. RAFV sponsored the running club all summer long. Before the summer even began, we responded to their need for decent running shoes for the children. We collected shoes from RAFV members, local schools and Dick Pond Athletics in St. Charles and managed to deliver nearly 300 pairs of shoes for the kids and their families. Then, we kicked off the summer season by visiting the club and inviting the kids to join running club. To make things exciting for the kids, we offered them some fun incentives for running. If they joined Running Club, they received a pedometer to keep track of their distance. If they could run 1 mile, they received a t-shirt and for 2 miles they went home with a drawstring bag. Dedicated runners that could complete a 5K (3.1miles) won a shopping trip with RAFV to Dick Pond Athletics in St. Charles to pick out their own BRAND NEW pair of running shoes. We celebrated the end of the Running Club season with a pizza party and a visit from the Ice Cream Truck! After the party, we took the kids who ran a 5K to Dick Ponds to pick out their shoes! Such a great day! It has been such a successful program! This year 88 kids participated in Running Club and we bought shoes for 16 5K’ers! These kids are an inspiration to us all!
